Belal Muhammad has made history in Mixed Martial Arts by becoming the first fighter of Palestinian descent to win a UFC title. In an exhilarating match, Muhammad seized the welterweight crown from the defending champion, Leon Edwards, with a unanimous decision victory at UFC 304. The fight, held in Manchester, England, concluded with scores of 48-47, 48-47, and 49-46, marking Muhammad’s 11th consecutive win and securing his place in the annals of MMA history.

Born in Chicago to Palestinian immigrant parents, the 36-year-old Muhammad has always been proud of his heritage. His victory was not just a personal achievement but a symbolic win for Palestinians and the people of Gaza. Before the fight, Muhammad expressed that he was fighting for himself and all those he represents. He stated, “It’s not just about myself, it’s about them [Palestinians and the people in Gaza].”

Muhammad’s journey to the top was filled with challenges. He had previously faced Edwards in 2021, but the about ended in a no-contest. This unsatisfactory result ignited a series of victories for both fighters. Edwards went on to win four consecutive matches and claimed the welterweight belt by defeating Kamaru Usman in 2022. He successfully defended his title twice before facing Muhammad again.

In the run-up to their rematch, Muhammad maintained his focus and dedication. He also used his platform to highlight his Palestinian roots. For his walkout, he chose “Dammi Falesteeni” (My Blood is Palestine) by Arab Idol winner Mohammed Assaf, a powerful statement of his identity and solidarity with his heritage. Muhammad has never shied away from using his voice for advocacy. He once remarked, “There aren’t a lot of Palestinian athletes that have a stage or platform where they can carry the flag. And now, especially during these times, I must carry that flag higher than ever.”

Muhammad’s triumph is more than just a sports milestone; it’s a beacon of hope and recognition for Palestinians worldwide. By winning the UFC title, he has shown that Palestinians can achieve greatness on the global stage. He emphasised this sentiment, saying, “Now I have a voice for people that don’t have a voice, for people that the world wants you to forget about. So, if I keep shining a light on that, raising their morale and hearts, I will do whatever I can.”

His victory celebration was a poignant moment. Despite his bloodied face, Muhammad dropped to his knees in a gesture of overwhelming emotion and gratitude. The championship belt wrapped around his waist symbolised his personal victory and the triumph of all he represented.

Belal Muhammad’s story is a testament to perseverance, pride, and the power of representation. It inspires many by showing that one can overcome obstacles and make a significant impact with determination and a strong sense of identity. His journey continues to inspire and uplift, proving that every fight is not just for oneself but for all those who stand behind you.
